Marlena begged me to delete the wall between the living room and kitchen several years back. I ignored her, like a good husband would. I was good.
Good grief! What if the wall is a bearing wall? What if the ceiling of this 43 year old house does not line up perfectly between the rooms? How will the scar in the floor be repaired without having to rip up and redo the flooring on both sides? If you can’t do it right, don’t do it at all. Start less, finish more. Blah, blah. I was scared.
Uncle Jake stopped by 4 months ago and assured me that the wall was safe to remove. He had built the house from the ground up when he was 20 years old. Now I was lazy.
New Year’s Day I pulled the trigger.
The wall’s came down and the dust went up and swirled around. All around.
I had fun. The kids thought it was crazy. Marlena beamed as she squinted through the haze. Why didn’t we do this 7 years ago?
More later when the paint has been rolled and the floor has healed - not 7 more years from now.
