Crabgrass Control – Too Late?

Crabgrass Control – Too Late?

Springtime is always the highlight of my year! Even though I am busy beyond comfort, I love the energy of new growth and experiencing the emergence from Winter dormancy. This Spring has been the coldest that I remember and all the usual deadlines are pretty much out the window when it comes to crabgrass control and planting grass seed. The forsythias have been blooming gloriously last week already while the soil temperatures linger in the 50’s. Peter Landshoot of Penn State University goes into the science behind crabgrass germination and management of crabgrass control.

So how late can you put crabgrass control on this spring? Usually I say Tax Day or April 15, but this year crabgrass control will be just fine well into May. There are a few tricks in the video about  applying crabgrass prevention and then overseeding bare spots a few weeks later.

Here is my take on crabgrass control and some practical ideas on planting seed along with crabgrass control.

Remember, you can get a 50lb bag of crabgrass control at the Wisegrass Seed Barn for $36 per bag. One bag covers 12,000 square feet.
